      1. Characteristics of Biomass Fuel

      Biomass fuel is a renewable carbon source with the characteristics of huge production, wide distribution, low sulfur, low nitrogen, fast growth, and low carbon dioxide emissions.

      The combustion of biomass fuels is mainly controlled by the following conditions:

      (1) A certain temperature;

      (2) A certain amount of air (oxygen);

      (3) The degree of mixing between fuel and air (oxygen);

      (4) The combustible materials in fuel undergo intense chemical reactions with oxygen in the air.

      The ignition temperature of biomass fuel is 250-400~C, which is lower than that of coal (the ignition temperature of coal is 400-500~C), and its temperature increase is supplied by the ignition heat. The main component of biomass fuel is combustible volatile matter, and its combustion process is the process of its combustible components intensifying with oxygen in the air and releasing heat. The oxygen demand is high, so the supply of oxygen determines the combustion reaction process. By increasing the oxygen supply through secondary air supply, the combustion reaction can be well controlled. Due to the high combustible volatile matter and large flame of biomass fuel, the furnace structure of current operating domestic and industrial boilers is not suitable for the flame space extension of biomass fuel. If biomass pellet fuel is directly used without modification, the boiler will experience serious phenomena such as insufficient combustion, black smoke emission, low efficiency, and dust pollution. Therefore, boilers burning biomass pellet fuel require the installation of specialized secondary air supply equipment to enhance oxygen intake, enabling full combustion, increasing furnace arch height and angle, which is conducive to the complete combustion of biomass fuel, effectively increasing furnace temperature, reducing the emission of carbon monoxide and smoke, and heat loss.

      (1) Due to the much lower ignition temperature and lower calorific value of biomass fuel compared to coal, the boiler cannot be pressurized when temporarily shut down. After ignition, the boiler needs to run continuously, and the daily operating time of the boiler is longer than that of coal-fired boilers. Therefore, the fuel consumption is higher than that of coal. Because the flame of biomass is relatively high, it is easy to shoot forward and burn the hopper.

      (2) When receiving a notice to reduce or suspend steam usage and temporarily shut down the furnace, the fuel on the grate must be burned off and the slag must be removed, otherwise it is easy to cause backfire and ignite the fuel in the fuel hopper.
