According to the different power sources used in the water cycle, waste heat boilers can be divided into two types: natural circulation waste heat boilers and forced circulation waste heat boilers.

Natural circulation: The water-cooled wall arranged in the furnace is heated by the radiation of high-temperature flue gas (or flame), and the temperature of the water inside the tube rapidly increases. Part of the water vaporizes, forming a mixture of steam and water inside the tube. The water arranged in the downcomer outside the furnace wall has a density greater than that of the steam water mixture because it is not heated.

The pressure on one side of the downcomer is greater than the pressure on one side of the water-cooled wall, and the difference between the two is the flow head. Under the action of the flow head, water continuously circulates from the downcomer to the water-cooled wall tube (riser), and this phenomenon is called natural circulation.

The waste heat boiler relies on the density difference between steam and water to form a water cycle. In order to ensure stable and safe water circulation, the resistance of the working fluid inside the pipes should be relatively small, so thicker pipes and larger steam drums are required. This means that the metal consumption increases, the boiler has a large water air gap and heat capacity, and the thermal inertia is relatively large, which prolongs the start-up time of the boiler. When the load changes, it is easy to generate significant thermal stress. Therefore, this type of waste heat boiler is suitable for working under stable load conditions.

The forced circulation waste heat boiler relies on a circulation pump to circulate the working fluid in the system, but the pump consumes additional power, reducing the overall system efficiency. In practical applications, a stable water circulation can be established using a circulating pump during the boiler start-up phase. When the system is stable, the circulating pump can be turned off and the steam water circulation can be carried out through natural circulation. This is called a composite waste heat boiler.
