      Column type sensor

      During the measurement process, gravity acts on the elastic body, causing deformation. This strain (positive or negative) is converted into an electronic signal by strain gauges attached to the elastic body. In addition to the essential strain gauges and elastomers, sensors usually also include a protective shell for the strain gauges, sealing elements, etc.

      Hollow column sensor

      The upper part of the elastic body is welded to the protective shell through two films. They are very rigid in the horizontal direction to prevent damage from lateral forces, and the measurement direction is flexible so that no horizontal force is generated during the measurement process. The circuit wiring is also led out from the protective ring through an airtight glass conduit. Especially forming a sensor with a completely sealed packaging. Its strain gauges are not affected by external gases and liquids.

      For sensors measuring extremely high loads, another shape of elastic body is usually selected, such as hollow cylindrical or tubular, while square columns are not suitable because a uniform strain field that is conducive to strain gauge measurement cannot be obtained. The picture shows a hollow cylindrical elastic body, which is relatively easy to manufacture and has extremely high resistance to lateral forces. And sealing is also easy to achieve, but the adhesion of strain gauges is relatively difficult.

      Hollow cylindrical elastomers have load loading problems and relatively high hysteresis errors, so the shape shown in the figure is often used in practice. The hollow column is divided into multiple sectors to reduce hysteresis, and the load is introduced through a fixed plate.

      Principle of Ring Torque

      It is usually necessary to reduce the overall height while improving accuracy, and an elastic body designed based on the principle of ring torque can solve this problem. Axial load is introduced through the inner shell, and the sensor housing supports itself on the support surface. The relative displacement between the inner and outer shells causes the ring between them to deform relative to the load. Based on this principle, sensors can withstand very high lateral forces.
