      The physical properties of transformer oil include appearance color, transparency, density, viscosity, flash point, pour point, interfacial tension, moisture, mechanical impurities, etc. 1. The appearance color, transparency, and density are mainly judged by the naked eye to determine the depth of the oil color and the transparency of the oil quality. Transformer oil is generally pale yellow or colorless. The lighter the color, the better its refinement level. The darker the color of the oil, the more non alkyl compounds it contains. The mass of oil per unit volume is called oil density. The density of oil is related to temperature, and it will change at different temperatures; When oil is heated, its volume expands and its density decreases, so the density measured at high temperatures is smaller than that measured at low temperatures. For the purpose of comparison, the density of general oil products is often expressed as the density at a specified temperature. In China, the standard density is defined as the density of petroleum and petroleum products at a standard temperature of 20 ℃.

      Operation requirements for transformer oil

      During operation, transformer oil will become damp at the junction with air, which not only reduces breakdown voltage and increases dielectric loss, but also enhances its corrosion catalytic effect on metals, leading to the formation of precipitates in the oil. It is generally believed that degraded oil is more susceptible to moisture than new oil, and the degradation rate is 2-4 times faster. If it is found that most of the silica gel has changed from its original blue color to red or purple red, it indicates that the desiccant has failed and the silica gel that has been dried should be replaced.

      During operation, transformer oil will gradually age due to the influence of air, sunlight, humidity, and temperature. Therefore, proactive measures need to be taken to keep it in good condition as much as possible to prolong its service life. At present, there are roughly the following measures adopted in actual production.

      Oxygenation protection

      Using inert nitrogen gas to fill the upper space of the transformer oil storage tank, the oil is always in contact with nitrogen gas, thus isolating the transformer oil from air and preventing premature aging of the oil.

      Second use oil purifier

      An oil purifier is a metal container filled with an adsorbent (acid removing silicone or activated alumina). When transformer oil flows through the adsorbent, moisture, free acids, and oxides that accelerate insulation oil aging are absorbed by the adsorbent, allowing the oil to be continuously regenerated and maintain a qualified state for a long time.
