      For newly built or existing high-voltage transmission lines of 220kV and above, which serve as communication trunk corridors, in order to ensure the compatibility of the communication line and transmission line operation life (more than 30 years), considering the reliability, construction, and maintenance of fiber optic communication, engineering personnel should choose OPGW. ADSS optical cables should not be used for 220kV and above trunk transmission lines.

      For existing transmission lines of 220kV and below, especially for communication between regional substations, ADSS optical cables can be considered. Engineering personnel should first consider the reliability of installing ADSS optical cables on existing power lines, evaluate the operating time of power lines, the degree of tower aging, original design standards, and other conditions to determine the feasibility of installation.

      Due to the fact that the design technical regulations for power lines have been modified, adjusted, and supplemented over the years, it is difficult to verify the strength of power line towers that have been in operation for many years, which has become a key issue in the installation of ADSS optical cables. The general principle is that ADSS optical cables can only be installed without affecting the safe operation of power lines and reducing reliability. Therefore, the author suggests installing ADSS optical cables and choosing power lines with better tower conditions as much as possible.

      In terms of products, there are currently ADSS optical cable products and inspection standards in China, such as the national standard GB/T18899 "All medium self-supporting optical cable" and the power industry standard DL/T788 "All medium self-supporting optical cable". Internationally, there are mainly IEEE-P1222 "IEEE Standard for All medium self-supporting optical cable for overhead transmission lines (draft)" and IEC60794-4 "Optical cable Part 4: Sub specification - Optical cable installed along power lines". In terms of engineering, there are domestic power industry standards DL/T5344 "Acceptance Specification for Power Fiber Optic Communication Engineering" and DL/T767 "Technical Conditions and Test Methods for Pre twisted Wire Fixtures for All Dielectric Self Supporting Optical Cables (ADSS)". However, there is currently no mature and effective line engineering design regulation/code and specification for ADSS optical cables. Therefore, the installation design of ADSS optical cables can only refer to the current power industry standard DL/T5092 "Technical Code for Design of 110-500kV Overhead Transmission Lines".
