Characteristics and functions of OPGW optical cable:
Fiber optic composite overhead ground wire (OPGW) is a ground wire that integrates communication optical cables and overhead transmission line lightning protection wires. It not only meets the technical requirements of fiber optic communication, but also meets the necessary characteristic requirements as a ground wire, including mechanical strength and electrical performance. Due to the fact that this type of ground wire embeds optical fibers in twisted wires and is installed on the top frame of high-voltage overhead transmission lines, it has the advantages of safety, reliability, no electromagnetic induction, and maintenance free. Therefore, it has been gradually applied in overhead transmission lines abroad since the late 1970s, and its usage has been increasing. According to incomplete statistics, OPGW optical cables have been laid for tens of thousands of kilometers worldwide so far. Since the 1990s, the use of OPGW optical cables in China has been increasing, with over 10000 kilometers of lines currently in operation.
The OPGW fiber optic cable project involves two aspects: transmission and communication, each with different focuses and perspectives. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss some principles in the bidding and design process. At the same time, due to the significant structural differences and inconsistent standards of OPGW optical cables produced by various manufacturers, it is necessary to fully understand the characteristics of OPGW optical cables of various structures in engineering bidding in order to select suitable products.
1、 OPGW optical cable standard
(1) Main characteristic parameters of OPGW optical cable
The main characteristic parameters of OPGW optical cable are almost all related to the span of the transmission tower, sag characteristics, wind and ice loads, suspension points of OPGW optical cable, and allowable tension. They can be summarized as follows:

(2) Fiber optic type and optical characteristics;
(3) Total outer diameter of OPGW optical cable (mm);
(4) Calculated cross-sectional area of the conductor (mm2);
(5) Calculated linear mass (kg/km);

OPGW optical cables with excellent performance should meet the above requirements. (2) Performance experiment of OPGW optical cable:
At present, there are two widely used standards for OPGW optical cables internationally. One is the IEC 1396 standard of the International Electrotechnical Commission, which specifies the electrical, mechanical, and physical performance requirements and experimental methods for fiber optic composite overhead ground wires; The other is the IEEE 1138 standard of the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, titled 'Fiber Optic Composite Overhead Ground Wire for Power Lines'. The two standards each have their own characteristics. For the convenience of comparison, the performance test requirements for OPGW optical cables in the two standards are listed as follows:
From this table, it can be seen that due to the complete set of IEC related standards, the IEC 1396 standard not only specifies the general requirements for OPGW cable formation, but also extensively references relevant standards in other experiments. For example, the fiber parameters follow IEC 793 without providing specific data, resulting in weak operability. However, the description of OPGW cable structure requirements is relatively flexible; The IEEE 1138 standard provides particularly detailed regulations for OPGW fiber optic cable components, cable structures, and experiments. It also has very detailed requirements for OPGW fiber optic cable installation tension, on-site acceptance experiments, installation, packaging, etc. Therefore, it has strong operability. However, its structural requirements for OPGW fiber optic cables are more inclined towards a structure where the optical unit is placed at the center of the cable, and its experimental content also lacks a lightning strike experiment.
Therefore, in the bidding and design process of OPGW optical cables, the implementation of OPGW optical cable standards should be mainly based on the IEEE 1138 standard, supplemented by the IEC 1396 standard, that is, the optical cable type test content should add lightning strike tests on the basis of the IEEE 1138 regulations; The content of the fiber optic type experiment shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions of IEEE 1138; The inspection content of the optical cable factory is selected from the routine experiment content.
2、 Structural characteristics of OPGW optical cable
The structure of OPGW includes fiber optic unit structure and ground wire unit.
(1) Fiber optic unit and its structure
Under normal operation and installation, a reasonable fiber optic unit structure should minimize the stress and attenuation of the fiber core of the optical cable. Therefore, the design of the fiber optic unit structure needs to consider necessary mechanical protection structures to prevent the fiber core from being squeezed, appropriate excess length of the fiber core to reduce stress on the fiber core, and measures to achieve moisture and heat resistance.
The different degrees of tightness in the arrangement of fiber cores in fiber optic unit structures can be divided into buffer tight sleeve structures and loose sleeve structures.
(2) Ground wire unit (outer twisted conductor)
The ground wire unit (outer stranded conductor) is mainly composed of aluminum clad steel wire (AS wire) and aluminum alloy wire, and its main function is:
1. OPGW is an overhead ground wire that requires load-bearing components, and the outer stranded conductor plays a load-bearing role, so that the optical fiber core in OPGW will not or rarely bear external forces.
2. It has a certain metal cross-section. When the OPGW line is short circuited or struck by lightning, the strong current will cause the conductor to heat up. However, an appropriate metal cross-section can ensure that the temperature rise of the OPGW is within the allowable range, so as not to damage the optical fiber due to heating.
3. The outer twisted conductor can provide an additional layer of protection for the optical unit, preventing it from being damaged by mechanical and external forces, as well as other adverse conditions.
3、 Requirements and conditions for the application of OPGW optical cable on overhead transmission lines
(1) Application requirements
OPGW is a channel for power fiber optic communication and also serves as a lightning protection line in overhead transmission lines. Therefore, it is required to meet the following requirements in application:
Firstly, the number, type, application wavelength, and optical attenuation of the optical unit should be considered, as well as the required transmission capacity of the system, the transmission wavelength of the optical transceiver, and the system interface. The above requirements directly affect the composition of optical cables, the design of fiber cores, and the state of fiber cores in OPGW.
As a lightning rod, it must also meet the electrical, mechanical, and physical performance requirements of the ground wire. In terms of electrical performance, it should meet the requirements of short-circuit current capacity and lightning protection in the system. As a ground wire application, OPGW is often supplemented with another shunt ground wire. Therefore, according to the requirements of the system, the single-phase short-circuit current of the substation bus should be calculated, the short-circuit fault time and the shunt ratio of the two ground wires to withstand the short-circuit current should be determined, and the low short-circuit current thermal capacity of OPGW should be finally determined, so as to determine the small conductive metal cross-sectional area, DC resistance and diameter of OPGW; In terms of mechanical and physical properties, it should meet the requirements of total tensile strength, elastic modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion, and linear weight.
