Asphalt pavement is affected by various natural factors and will gradually age over time. Aging asphalt will weaken the bond between asphalt and aggregates, causing the pavement particles to fall off and gradually expand, affecting the use of road engineering. Method/Steps
The aging of asphalt pavement is caused by the aging of asphalt, and the regeneration also revolves around the regeneration of asphalt. Adding recycled asphalt or asphalt with lower viscosity to aged asphalt for mixing and adjusting the adhesion of aged asphalt to improve its functional use. The recycling of asphalt pavement can save a large amount of asphalt and gravel materials, reduce engineering costs, minimize environmental pollution, and avoid the treatment of asphalt road waste, resulting in significant economic and environmental benefits.
The steps of recycling: digging and excavating aged asphalt roads → transporting to recycling sites → crushing and screening waste materials → mixing and stirring with appropriate amounts of new asphalt, new aggregates, recycled materials, etc. → making new asphalt materials, mainly used for laying road base or surface layer lower layers, etc.
Regenerative economy: Regenerative economy mainly uses low viscosity petroleum mineral oil. In order to save costs, waste materials such as engine oil, heavy oil, lubricating oil, etc. are mainly used in the project, which is not only economical but also environmentally friendly, and improves material utilization efficiency.
In the process of recycling and reusing asphalt road waste, we need to add recycled asphalt to the old asphalt road material. The amount of recycled asphalt added needs to be tested and confirmed. After testing the viscosity or penetration of the old asphalt, the aging degree of the asphalt material is confirmed, and an appropriate proportion of recycled asphalt is calculated and added. Regenerative asphalt can effectively soften brittle and hard aged asphalt, facilitating full decomposition and effective mixing of new materials. Regeneration can also regulate the colloidal structure of asphalt and improve its fluidity.
The mix proportion of recycled asphalt mixture: The proportion of the mix proportion should fully consider the aging degree of the old pavement material, as well as the asphalt content and aggregate gradation in the original mix proportion of the asphalt road, so as to ensure the reasonable mixing of newly produced asphalt mixture. We should also fully consider the requirements for road use, so that the recycled new mixture can meet various physical and mechanical performance indicators of the road, and meet national, regional and other standard requirements
Production process: Recycled asphalt mixture can adopt various production processes, including hot mixing and cold mixing according to the regeneration method, manual and mechanical mixing according to the use of mechanical equipment, and on-site and factory regeneration according to the production site. The proportion of old materials added varies with different production technologies. When using a large drum mixer, the proportion of old materials can reach 40% -80%, while other mixes generally do not exceed 30%. For manual mixing, the proportion is lower based on on-site conditions and experience judgment.
The current method of using recycled asphalt mixture with asphalt content is the Marshall test method. After the laboratory provides the ratio, due to the complexity of on-site construction, some indicators that cannot meet the requirements based on empirical judgment may be appropriately relaxed.
On site use of recycled asphalt mixture: Due to the performance limitations of the recycled mixture after adding old materials compared to newly produced asphalt road mixture, it is recommended not to use it on the topmost layer of the road surface during use. It is generally used for the base layer, lower layer of the road surface layer, middle layer, etc., to avoid direct contact with air and accelerate aging.
Old material addition ratio: If the recycled mixture is directly used for road surface materials, in situations with high traffic volume or expected future traffic volume, high traffic load, the old material content should be controlled at 30%~40%. For secondary roads, branches, and secondary roads with low traffic volume, the old material content can reach 50%~80%. When using recycled mixture for the bottom layer or base of the road surface, ensure the quality of the recycled mixture while using as much old material as possible.
During the process of recycling old materials, attention should be paid to not mixing soil and other debris into the old materials. If they have already been mixed, they should be cleaned up to avoid affecting the quality of the recycled mixture and reducing the durability of the road.
