People are not unfamiliar with nylon, and nylon products are ubiquitous in daily life, but few people know its history. Nylon is the first synthetic fiber developed in the world.
At the beginning of the 20th century, conducting basic scientific research in the business world was considered an incredible thing. In 1926, DuPont, an American industrial company, proposed to conduct basic research on discovering new scientific facts out of interest in fundamental science. In 1927, the company decided to pay $250000 annually for research expenses and began hiring chemical researchers. By 1928, DuPont established the Institute of Basic Chemistry, and Dr. Wallace H. Carothers (1896-1937), who was only 32 years old, was hired as the head of the Department of Mechanization at the institute.
Carothers, an American organic chemist. Born on April 27, 1896 in Dun, Iowa, USA. He passed away on April 29, 1937 in Philadelphia, USA. After obtaining a doctoral degree from the University of Illinois in 1924, he worked as a teacher and researcher in organic chemistry at both the university and Harvard University. In 1928, I applied to conduct organic chemistry research at DuPont's laboratory in Wilmington, USA. He led a series of studies on obtaining high molecular weight substances through polymerization methods. In 1935, a polymer was prepared using adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine as raw materials. Due to the presence of 6 carbon atoms in both components, it was called polymer 66 at that time. He melted the polymer and pressed it out through an injection needle, which stretched it under tension and was called a fiber. This type of fiber, namely polyamide 66 fiber, was named Nylon after industrialization in 1939 and was the earliest synthetic fiber variety to achieve industrialization.
The synthesis of nylon laid the foundation for the synthetic fiber industry, and the appearance of nylon gave textiles a completely new look. Nylon stockings woven from this fiber are both transparent and more durable than stockings. On October 24, 1939, when DuPont publicly sold nylon stockings at its headquarters, it caused a sensation and was regarded as a rare item that was eagerly sought after. People praised this fiber with phrases such as "as thin as spider silk, as strong as steel wire, and as beautiful as silk". By May 1940, sales of nylon fiber textiles had spread throughout the United States.
From the outbreak of World War II until 1945, the nylon industry shifted towards producing products such as parachutes, aircraft tires, curtains, and military uniforms. Due to the characteristics and wide range of uses of nylon, it developed rapidly after World War II. Various products of nylon, from stockings and clothing to carpets, fishing nets, etc., appeared in countless ways and are one of the three major synthetic fibers.
