The chemical and physical properties of PA6 are very similar to PA66, however, its melting point is lower and the process temperature range is wide. Its impact resistance and solubility are better than PA66, but it also has stronger moisture absorption. Because many quality characteristics of plastic parts are affected by moisture absorption, this should be fully considered when designing products using PA6. In order to improve the mechanical properties of PA6, various modifiers are often added. Glass is the most common additive, and sometimes synthetic rubber such as EPDM and SBR are added to improve impact resistance.
Using PA6 material can achieve a semi transparent effect, but its temperature resistance is not ideal. If PA66 is used, the semi transparent effect cannot be achieved. PA66 has better heat resistance than PA6, good rigidity, and good toughness. Nylon 66 is more expensive than nylon 6 and has a softer hand feel. It can be used as ultra-fine fiber and high-end clothing fabric. Nowadays, high-quality down fabrics on the market all use nylon 66, which has a smooth hand feel, light and soft texture, and anti feather effect. But dyeing is difficult, not easy to color, requires high temperature dyeing, and the color fastness is not very good. Nylon 66 and nylon 6 are both polyamide fibers. Nylon 66 is formed by the condensation of hexamethylenediamine adipate; Nylon 6 is condensed from caprolactam. From a molecular structure perspective, these two types of fibers are very similar, so their physical and chemical properties are also basically similar. The difference is that the hydrogen bonds between adjacent molecules of nylon 66 are more firmly bound, so its melting point is as high as 260 ℃, which is higher than nylon 6 and has superior heat resistance. Both have good weaving and sewing performance, but nylon 66 has a higher melting point, better heat resistance, and better elastic modulus, making it more suitable for manufacturing heat-resistant and strain resistant products such as tire cord threads, hot water washing fabrics, and woven fabrics. However, these are all distinguished from subtle aspects. In fact, the difference between the two in clothing textiles is not significant. The main difference lies in industrial applications, especially in the use of curtain threads. Nylon 66 is more excellent.
PA6 has good toughness and is commonly used in climbing hands, automotive structural components, etc. PA66 is a tough and hard material used in industrial gears such as marine propellers.
For products without additives, the shrinkage rate of PA6 is between 1% and 1.5%. Adding glass fiber additives can reduce the shrinkage rate to 0.3% (but slightly higher in the direction perpendicular to the process). The shrinkage rate of formed assembly is mainly affected by the crystallinity and moisture absorption of the material.
