Optical properties of polycarbonate
1. Transparency performance
When light enters the material medium from the air layer, the loss between the material medium and the air interface is one of the factors affecting the transparency of the material. The relationship between the light reflectance R and the refractive index n of the material is as follows: R=(n-1) 2/(n+1) 2. The refractive index of polycarbonate is n=1.5869, so its R is only 5.1%, indicating that the loss of light at the interface between polycarbonate material and air is very small.
The transparency of materials is also related to their absorption of light in the visible light range, that is, when incident light passes through, there will be corresponding energy level transitions inside the material due to the effect of light, resulting in the absorption of light energy. The chain structure in polycarbonate is mainly composed of single bonds, and the energy levels of the σ electronic states in the single bonds are minimally affected by visible light irradiation. So in the visible light range, the influence of absorption on the transparency of polycarbonate can be ignored.
2. Refractive properties
Refractive properties often play a decisive role in the selection of optical materials. Polycarbonate is a type of optical resin material with a relatively high refractive index. Its refractive index for visible light is 1.5872 at 20 ℃, and it ranges from 1.5914 at -20 ℃ to 1.5745 at 140 ℃, with a linear relationship with temperature.
The higher the refractive index, the better the aberration correction can be achieved, which means that the curvature and thickness of optical lenses processed with it can be effectively reduced, thereby reducing their mass without affecting their refractive performance, making optical instruments smaller and lighter.
