Everyone knows that PC is a common engineering plastic, but ordinary polycarbonate has poor impact resistance and chemical resistance, and cannot be applied in many fields. The usual method is to modify ordinary PCs, such as PC/ABS and PC/PBT alloys, but sometimes transparency or rigidity may be lost. There are various types of PC copolymerization, and today we will introduce two commonly used commercial methods.

In 1969, GE first developed polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) copolymer polycarbonate. Polysiloxane molecules contain a large number of silicon oxygen bonds, with a flexible main chain, good thermal stability, flame retardancy, and selective permeability to oxygen and nitrogen.

Mechanism of silicon containing copolymer PC

Both conventional PC and silicon containing PC monomers contain bisphenol A, but silicon containing PC is also copolymerized with polydimethylsiloxane.

We all know that polycarbonate contains rigid groups with large benzene rings, which limit the internal rotation of molecular chains. Additionally, the strongly polar group - COO (ester group) provides significant intermolecular forces, binding the molecular chains to each other and further weakening their flexibility. Therefore, the glass transition temperature and melting temperature of polymers are high, the viscosity of the melt is high, and the molecular chains are not easy to slip under external forces. Moreover, due to the presence of - COO (ester group) in the molecular chain, esters can undergo hydrolysis reactions in the presence of acids or bases to produce the corresponding acids or alcohols. Therefore, conventional PC has low hydrolytic stability, is sensitive to notches, has poor scratch resistance, and has a significant yellowing effect when exposed to ultraviolet light for a long time. Additionally, PC is susceptible to immersion in certain organic solvents.
