The application of endoscopes (CE) faces some very important issues, such as image quality and field of view, which pose difficulties for doctors to make accurate diagnoses. Obtaining wide-angle images of the intestinal tract is a technical challenge due to the volume limitations of CE. To obtain clearer and wider angle images of the intestinal tract, this paper proposes a simple and practical design of a CE lens based on ZEMAX. The new lens improves field curvature and distortion by using a special transparent cover and non spherical technology. The designed FOV is 105 ° and F # is 2.8. The modulation transfer function (MTF) is approximately 40% at 45lp/mm, with distortion below 15%. It can fully meet the requirements of CE lenses and provide high-quality images for a 1/4-inch CMOS image sensor with an effective pixel size of 1600 × 1200 and a pixel size of 2.2 μ m.
Considering that CE lenses are not precision measuring instruments, but disposable products, in order to reduce manufacturing costs, all lenses are made of optical plastic materials. PMMA and PC are two commonly used optical plastics. Due to PMMA's high water absorption and PC's high birefringence, some superior optical plastics have emerged, such as cyclic olefin polymers (COP) and cyclic olefin copolymers (COC). E48R is one of the most commonly used COP materials, with a refractive index of 1.531 and a dispersion coefficient of 56.04. It has low water absorption and low density, is easy to shape, and has excellent wear resistance. It can be used as a standard plastic material for cameras. Compared with PMMA, COC has better thermal stability and moisture resistance. The refractive index is as high as 1.533, almost unaffected by temperature and wavelength. At wavelengths of near ultraviolet, visible light, and near-infrared, its transmittance also reaches 91.2%. In this article, one lens used as an optical mask is made of E48R material, while the other two lenses are made of COC material. Then, we need to add a glass library that includes the optical materials we have selected in ZEMAX.
