PEEK is a type of polyether ether ketone, belonging to the class of superpolymers.
PEEK is a thermoplastic aromatic polymer.
It is a semi crystalline polymer.
The melting temperature is about 343 ℃, so it is processed between 380-420 ℃. The temperature curve of the extruder depends on the extruder size, screw profile, screw speed, linear velocity, etc.
Unlike fluoropolymers, PEEK can be processed using conventional equipment.
The extruder barrel and screw can be made of nitrocellulose steel, without using bimetallic barrels or Hastelloy screws.
The crosshead is made of hardened steel, not Hastelloy alloy.
General processing
PEEK is provided in particle form.
The supplied particles are usually already dry. After opening the bag, PEEK can absorb moisture.
To obtain high-quality extruded products, use a hot air circulation oven to maintain a humidity below 0.02%.
The particles can be dried at 150 ℃ for 3 hours.
Due to PEEK being a semi crystalline polymer, its insulation performance depends on the recrystallization process after the machine head, which affects the size and distribution of the crystals
For the correct insulation recrystallization process, cables/wires must be air cooled for at least 4-8 meters after the head exit. Of course, the length of air cooling depends on the curvature and linear velocity of the insulation.
After air cooling, PEEK can be cooled by water.
Therefore, once the recrystallization process is terminated, cooling water (or even hot water) can be used
