Many times, when you bring data to the client or supervisor, you may encounter the question of how your observation point data is still increasing. How did you explain it? I believe most people find it difficult to give a reasonable explanation, but the client or supervisor doesn't understand. You may say that our measurements are just like this, there is a slight error, but there is no problem, so you just pass it off. But you still don't know where the reason is.

There are actually many reasons for the increase in observation points. Based on my experience, I have summarized these points according to different situations






The reasons for the uplift of settlement observation points on buildings are as follows:
1. The sinking of the benchmark or working base point results in. Solution: Actually, we just need to do a good job of inspection. The requirement of the observation technology plan itself is to set up at least 3 reference points. When this is needed, we only need to close and observe these 3 reference points to know if there is any subsidence. After confirming the sinking, we can re observe with other reference points.
2. There is an error in data measurement, which can be directly detected by checking the closure error. If the closure error is too large, it may be caused by a reading error during the measurement, such as the front and rear measurements being reversed or the leveling ruler being tilted forward and backward during measurement. Solution: Retest.
3. The i-angle of the level gauge is too large, which can be said that if you set the single station tolerance limit too large, please refer to the Tianbao DiNi03 electronic level gauge tutorial for specific settings. The instrument itself has an i-angle, and you did not maintain the same front and rear line of sight when measuring, resulting in an increasing accumulation of errors. Solution: By checking the angle i of the leveling instrument, you can adjust it yourself. The Tianbao leveling instrument is located at the bottom with a small hole. Please adjust it accordingly. The specific adjustment can be referred to, but of course, the front and rear line of sight should be kept the same for each observation in the future.
4. Geological problems, which are generally particularly complex, may be caused by long-term heavy rainfall leading to the rise of groundwater levels, resulting in uplift, or by the bearing layer being shale, which has slight expansibility and may cause foundation rebound. Solution: If it is a uniform rise, there is no need to worry. If it is an uneven rise, reinforcement measures should be taken, and the specific causes and treatment methods of uneven settlement can be referred to.
For the rise of the settlement observation point at the top of the foundation pit pile, there may be reasons other than the above: it is the support method adopted for the foundation pit. Our unit once conducted an observation of the support of a fish belly beam foundation pit. From the perspective of force analysis, it can be seen that during the entire excavation period, the force on the fish belly beam is pushed towards the outside of the foundation pit. Therefore, it is not surprising that the observation point rises as a whole after being subjected to force. Our observation point basically rises by 1-2cm as a whole. Therefore, when encountering different support methods for the foundation pit, we should learn to analyze the force and not worry about problems just because of the rise.
Of course, there may be other reasons as well, so it is necessary to conduct a specific analysis of the problem. The rise of settlement observation points is not scary, as long as the cause is identified and targeted measures are taken, it can be quickly resolved.
